Recently, I came across a story about a violent fight on a school bus. A young man assaulted a young woman so severely that he knocked out her teeth. Like many others, I was horrified. The brutality alone was enough to shake me. But what unsettled me even more was what surrounded the violence.
Every educator reading this understands what it means to teach with intention — to honor not just what we teach, but how we teach it. In this era of rapidly advancing technology, Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a powerful tool. It can transform lesson planning, generate activities, support differentiation, and enhance student engagement. However, alongside this power comes responsibility — to our students, our communities, and the environment we all share.
Artificial Intelligence is no longer a future consideration in education—it is a present reality. Students are engaging with AI-powered tools daily for writing, creativity, research, and problem-solving, often outside the awareness or guidance of educators. Teachers, meanwhile, are expected to manage this rapidly evolving landscape with limited district policy, inconsistent training, and growing ethical concerns.
Artificial Intelligence has officially entered the classroom—not as a passing trend, but as a transformative force reshaping how educators plan, teach, assess, and reflect. For teachers across the country, the integration of AI into professional practice is met with a complex blend of enthusiasm and caution. It is viewed simultaneously as a capacity-building tool and a potential disruptor of authentic learning.
